Add Sweet Alyssum to Spring Containers

Spring containers can look and smell better with Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima). Here's how to use Sweet Alyssum in spring containers

Select a Container

Choose containers with good drainage to avoid waterlogging. Sweet Alyssum thrives in hanging baskets and containers.

Prepare Soil

Drier potting mix. To improve drainage, add perlite or sand. Sugar Alyssum likes slightly alkaline to neutral soil.

Choose Healthy Plants

Buy healthy Sweet Alyssum plants from a nursery or grow from seeds. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the final projected frost date or outdoors after the frost threat has gone.

Arrange Plants

A taller central plant for height. Good filler: Sweet Alyssum provides dense, low-growing covering.  Spiller: Container-draping plants.

Planting

For transplants, drill a hole in the potting mix, place the Sweet Alyssum plant, and firm the soil around the base.  Seeds: Scatter and lightly press seeds into the soil. Keep soil wet till germination.

Watering

Sweet Alyssum likes damp but not saturated soil. Water containers when the top inch of soil feels dry. Drain excess water to prevent root rot.
