How To Divide Ferns In The Fall – And Save Them For Next Year!

Fall fern division propagates plants and ensures they grow well next year. Divide and preserve your ferns with this step-by-step guide:

Select the Right Time

The best time to divide ferns is early fall, when temperatures are colder but before frost. This lets ferns root before winter.

Prepare Tools

Bring a sharp spade or garden knife, gloves, a trowel, and pots or a prepared garden bed for transplanting.

Hydrate Ferns

A day before dividing, thoroughly water the ferns. This simplifies removal and reduces plant stress.

Uproot Ferns

Stay away from the fern clump's base when digging to avoid injuring the roots. Remove the cluster with as much soil as possible around the roots.

Divide Clump

Gently split the clump with a sharp spade or garden knife. Each segment should have many fronds and roots. Cut the root ball carefully to reduce injury.

Replant Divisions

Plant the separated parts immediately in well-prepared soil in pots or your garden. Make sure your soil is organic and well-draining before planting. Divisions should be spaced according to fern variety maturity.
