How To Prep Your Skin Before Applying Makeup

Prepping your skin before applying makeup can improve its appearance and longevity. Follow these seven steps to prepare your skin for makeup

Wash Your Face

Clear the slate. Use a gentle cleanser for your skin type to eliminate grime, oil, and pollutants. This keeps pores clear and smooths makeup application.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation smooths skin by removing dead cells. Use gentle exfoliants 2-3 times a week. For sensitive skin, use a moderate scrub or chemical exfoliator containing AHAs or BHAs.

Tone

Toning balances skin pH and tightens pores. Choose an alcohol-free toner to avoid skin dryness. Apply it to your hands or cotton pad and let it absorb.

Apply Serum

Serums can hydrate, brighten, or anti-age skin. Apply a few drops of your preferred serum to your face and gently push it in.

Moisturise

All skin types need moisture. It moisturises and smooths skin for makeup. Choose a lightweight moisturiser for oily skin and a heavier one for dry skin.

Use Eye Cream.

An eye cream can help the delicate skin around the eyes. This reduces puffiness, dark circles, and smooths concealer and eye makeup.

Prepare Skin

The last step before makeup is primer. It fills pores and fine wrinkles, smooths skin, and prolongs makeup. Mattifying, moisturising, or color-correcting primers are available for oily, dry, and uneven skin types.

Additional Advice

For smooth lipstick application and no chapping, exfoliate and moisturise your lips.  Sunscreen: Protect against UV damage by using sunscreen last in your skincare process if your makeup doesn't contain SPF.
